Delivery Operations for U.S. Fresh Produce Wholesale

Plan and Execute Produce Deliveries Around Real Operating Constraints

A fresh produce delivery is not just an address and a stop order. Customer receiving windows, truck capacity, driver time, loading, unloading and changing conditions all affect whether the day can actually be executed.

SLAKPI connects those constraints for U.S. fresh produce distributors and wholesalers from pending delivery through route planning, driver execution and delivery result. Dispatchers can build the route around real operating conditions, supervisors can follow progress, and the result at the customer flows back to the commercial record.

Start delivery planning from real Delivered orders

Logistics begins from sales orders that already require company delivery.

When a sales order uses Delivered terms, SLAKPI creates a pending delivery for the order. Product that has not yet been received is not available for route planning.

That keeps the delivery queue tied to real customer commitments instead of a separate dispatch list.

The work before that point—including receiving, physical movement, customer pickup and warehouse preparation—belongs to warehouse operations and fulfillment. Delivery logistics takes ownership when the operational question becomes how the Delivered order will reach the customer.

Build routes around the constraints of the delivery day

A route must work operationally, not only look efficient on a map.

SLAKPI can build delivery plans around constraints including:

  • customer receiving windows, including weekly hours and delivery-specific exceptions;
  • vehicle pallet capacity;
  • driver shift limits, lunch and short breaks;
  • warehouse loading time and unloading time;
  • delivery priority, including overdue and current-day work;
  • vehicle fuel information when the required vehicle data is available.

If one vehicle cannot cover the work as a single trip, SLAKPI can organize chained trips. It can also identify stops that cannot fit the current plan and provide the operational reason.

Future deliveries that fit the available route can be suggested for earlier execution where appropriate.

The result is a route proposal built around the realities that determine whether produce can actually be delivered.

Keep the dispatcher in control of the final route

A proposed route remains a planning decision.

Routes move through a draft-and-confirm workflow. Before confirmation, the dispatcher can reorder stops and see the timing update, or restore the suggested order.

SLAKPI also creates a loading list for each route, grouped by sales order with the exact units required. The list can be viewed, printed, saved as a PDF or emailed to the warehouse.

That list forms the operating bridge back to warehouse operations and fulfillment: Logistics determines what the route requires, while the warehouse remains responsible for preparing the physical product before departure.

Give the driver a clear sequence on the phone

Once the route moves from planning to execution, the driver works from the SLAKPI mobile app.

The driver workflow guides the route through actions such as:

Start loading → Start delivery → Next delivery

As the route progresses, the driver receives the relevant stop information and can open turn-by-turn navigation in the phone's map application.

SLAKPI can detect route arrival automatically while an active route is being executed, and the driver workflow is designed to continue through periods of poor mobile coverage.

When the truck departs, the related sales order moves to Sent. The delivery result determines what happens next.

Record proof of delivery as an operational result

The delivery result captures what actually happened at the customer.

SLAKPI supports three result paths:

Delivery result What is recorded Operational consequence
Delivered Receiver name and delivery photos The order moves to Fulfilled
Delivered with differences Partial rejection or returned cases by item, plus delivery evidence The sales order is adjusted and the customer invoice is flagged for AR
Failed A reason such as customer closed, delivery rejected, incorrect order or other The order returns to its previous status and can be planned again

Each order retains its delivery attempts and events, keeping the route result connected to the order that created the delivery.

Carry delivery exceptions back to Sales and AR

A delivery exception is not finished when the driver records it.

When a delivery is completed with differences, SLAKPI records the rejected or returned quantities against the delivery result. That result creates the downstream commercial consequence: the sales order is adjusted and the related customer invoice is flagged for AR attention.

The delivery workflow owns the result and exception.

When the question becomes how the sales order is handled commercially after that result, continue into sales, CRM and customer credit.

When the question becomes how the invoice and resulting receivable are handled, continue into accounts receivable and connected finance operations.

And when returned quantities make the resulting stock position the primary question, continue into inventory availability and PO-line traceability.

That preserves one connected chain:

delivery result → exception → sales-order consequence → invoice / AR consequence

without separating what happened at the customer from the records that must respond to it.

See route progress while trucks are moving

Delivery planning does not end when a truck leaves.

SLAKPI's live delivery view can show truck positions, stop progress, current ETAs and receiving windows that are at risk.

When conditions during the route change, SLAKPI can suggest a different stop order. The supervisor decides whether to accept that suggestion or keep the current route.

A new delivery can also be added to a route already in progress, including a warehouse reload stop when one is required.

Supervisors can view delivery activity from the web and through a mobile live map, keeping current route execution visible while the day is still in motion.

SLAKPI Live Tracking: map with a truck's current position and its next stop, above a route that is out for delivery and running 42 minutes ahead of schedule, listing its stops in order with status, sales orders and updated ETAs

Keep vehicle information connected to route planning

The route depends on the vehicle assigned to run it.

SLAKPI fleet records can keep vehicle information including:

  • vehicle name, plate, make, model and year;
  • pallet capacity;
  • city and highway MPG;
  • tank size;
  • home base;
  • usual driver;
  • vehicle documents;
  • maintenance history and next-service date.

Vehicle capacity and available fuel information can participate in delivery planning and route cost estimates. Maintenance records provide the operating team with the next-service context alongside the vehicle record.

This gives dispatchers the fleet information needed by the delivery workflow without separating the vehicle from the routes it is expected to run.

Review route performance after the delivery day closes

Completed routes become operating history.

SLAKPI freezes route metrics when the route closes and can review them over time by date range and driver.

Route history can include:

  • miles driven, or an estimate identified as such when a route trail is unavailable;
  • driving, total and stopped time;
  • estimated fuel;
  • deliveries per hour;
  • on-time rate;
  • failed deliveries by cause;
  • deliveries with differences by reason.

That gives Operations a record of how delivery execution actually performed—not only how the route looked when it was planned.

Apply route planning to field sales visits

The routing capability can also support in-person sales visits to prospects and customers.

Pending visits come from CRM activity. A seller can run the visit route from the mobile app and close a stop as Visited or Not visited, with the result and next action returning to the CRM record.

The routing work belongs here; the customer relationship, commercial activity and follow-up remain part of sales, CRM and customer activity.
